cd cover Starostin and Mario
Proshche Prostogo (Sketis)

Well known Russian vocalist Sergei Starostin (vocals, rojok [Russian horn], prosvirelka, gusli (Russian zither) teams with the inventive percussionist Mario (ceramic percussion, barabanka [shepherdsí signal], darbuk, cowbell and drum set) to explore traditional works (instrumental and lyrical) in a very new and expansive light. 11 tracks range from 30 second shepherd's calls to 10 minute epics. Sadly, the notes are all in Russian, with no translations of lyrics or other information.

What the artists say about the recording:
This album is a superb live recording of a concert at the DOM Club in Moscow from the major Russian singer, musician and researcher Sergey Starostin, who is one of the top singers of Russian traditional songs, and young prodigy percussionist Mario, originally from Moldova, who specializes in jazz and world music, and just like Starostin, often makes his instruments.

This was their first collaboration experience on stage, an improvisation that afterwards, due to its aesthetic immaculacy has established itself as a major project. As it was made without much rehearsal, "without toil", the album is called accordingly "Simpler than Simple".

"We just had this good mood, and this remained on tape. And it has this feeling of easiness and simplicity" Ė Starostin.

The lyrics to one of the songs, "Gluboko, gluboko" (Deep, deep)

Pod zemlŽi ruda
Gluboko, gluboko
V kolodeze voda
Glubje togo
Moyo gore
Glubje togo
Moi skorbi

Shiroko, shiroko
Razlilas' reka
Shiroko, shiroko
Razleglis' polya
Shire togo
Svet blagodati
Shire togo
Moyo schast'ye

Daleko, daleko
Ubejal moi kon'
Daleko, daleko
Uskakal moi kon'
Daleko, daleko
Ne dognat' yego
Daleko, daleko
Ne poimat' yego
Dalshe togo
Moya pechal',
Dalshe togo
Moya toska

Vysoko, vysoko
Uletel sokol
Vysoko, vysoko
Uletel sokol
Vysoko, vysoko
Podnyalsya sokol
Vysoko za oblaka
Uletel sokol
Vyshe togo
Moya radost'
Vyshe togo
Moya lyubov'

Deep, deep
Under the Earth [lies] the ore
Deep, deep
In the well [is] the water
Deeper than that
[Is] my grief,
Deeper than that
[Are] my sorrows

Wide, wide
Flows the river
Wide wide
Lie fields
Wider than that
[Is] the light of bliss
Wider than that
[Is] my happiness

Far, far
Has run away my horse
Far, far
Has ridden my horse
Far, far
Cannot outrun him
Far, far
Cannot catch him
Farther than that
[Is] my sadness
Farther than that
[Is] my longing

High, high
Has flown the falcon
High, high
Has flown the falcon
High, high
Has risen the falcon
High beyond the clouds
Has flown the falcon
Higher than that
[Is] my joy
Higher than that
[Is] my love

Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
