Janet Russell
Bright Shining Morning? (Harbourtown Records, UK)

Janet Russell's second solo album with some help from Mary MacMaster, Tom McConville and Sara Grey (amongst others). Once again a mixture of traditional and contemporary songs.

About the artist:
Janet will be known to many people who love acoustic music especially round the UK, but also further afield in Europe and the U.S.A. where she has toured both solo and with Scottish singing partner Christine Kydd. Known both for her songwriting (her "Secretary's Song" was the most requested song on the UK National radio programme "Folk on Two" in 1988), and for her interpretation of traditional songs and the work of other songwriters such as her partner, Jim Woodland, she is capable of giving superb performances of a great breadth of material.

Over the past couple of years Janet has concentrated on performing Scottish material (vocal dance tunes and traditional ballads) with her singing partner Christine Kydd. They were invited to do an official showcase at the North American Folk Alliance Conference in Portland, Oregon in February '95 where they took the conference by storm. This was followed by a large article in the widely read US acoustic music magazine "Dirty Linen". Since then they have toured extensively at home and abroad, and are now planning to take a year out from the duo to regenerate some creative ideas and give time to some other projects they have in hand.

Meanwhile Janet's solo career has broadened into many areas such as the show she performs in conjunction with the well loved storyteller Taffy Thomas, and written by her partner, Jim Woodland. The show is called "Take These Chains From My Heart" and takes the form of a narrative linking traditional tales and newly written songs round the theme of physical and psychological recovery from a stroke. This is based on Taffy's life experience and was written from information given not only by Taffy himself, but also his wife Chrissie, and their GP who saw the family through the crisis. A cassette of the whole show is available from Harbourtown Records and from Janet - contact address are given below. Janet and Taffy will still be performing the show in 1997 and are about to embark on a short tour of Northern Ireland, including Londonderry, Portadown and Magherafelt.

Janet also took part in a show called "Flights of Fancy" - a newly composed work by Pete Moser about the migratory birds of Morecambe Bay. This is a beautiful piece with a jazzy feel but which crosses many musical boundaries and includes choral work as well as solo parts.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
