Niklas Roswall

solo och med vänner

Tongang, $18.99
Item Number: cda-roswall

The well repsected nyckelharpa player from Sweden. He became world champion on the chromatic nyckelharpa in 1996. On this 1997 CD he plays a selection of both unusual and common tunes. Most of the tunes are from Uppland, the centre of the nyckelharpa tradition, but there are also a number of tunes from other parts of Sweden and Norway. Niklas plays both solos and duets with some of his friends: Jens Engelbrecht on the guitar, and Ola Hertzberg and Markus Svensson on the nyckelharpa. (out of print - 2 copies left)

Some suggestions:

Aurelio : Darandi
Celebrating 30 years of Garifuna music by one of the region's most important contemporary artists, Darandi is a tour de force of Latin American music. The CD is packaged in an illustrated hard-cover book with historical and biographical notes, as well as notes on each of the songs.

Various artists : Urgent Jumping!: East African Musiki Wa Dansi Classics
A collection of 27 East African classics from 1972 to 1982 compiled by the British DJ and journalist John Armstrong. This 2 CD set is a wonderful collection of two and one half hours of music from 21 Kenyan, Tanzanian and Congolese bands. Features: L'Orch. Dar International, Afro 70, Kauma Boys Band, Super Mambo Jazz Band "69", Maquis du Zaire, Victoria Jazz Band, Orchestre Conga Internationale, The Golden Kings Band, Sunburst Band, Urafiki Jazz Band, L'Orchestre Grand Piza, Hafusa Abasi, Slim Ali and the Kikulacho Yahoos Band, L'Orch. Moja One, Sega Sega Band, L'Orchestre Super Mambo, Earthquake Jazz Band, Vijana Jazz Band, Orchestre Special Liwanza, Juwata Jazz Band and Orchestre Super Jambo.

Egeland, Molsky and Jarvela : Rauland Rambles
American Bruce Molsky, Finn Arto Järvelä and Norwegian Ånon Egeland join together in a traditional music tour de force. Fiddles abound, along with banjo and touches of ukelele, kantele and jew's harp. They play each others folk music like a natural part of their DNA. It's seamless and vibrant. And it is all recorded at a live concert.

Kata : Tivils Dotur
Five Faroese singers, a capella and accompanied by a small ensemble, explore traditional songs of the Faroe Islands in new contexts.

Omar Sosa and Sekou Keita : Transparent Water
The latest global collaboration by Cuban pianist Omar Sosa. This time around Sosa he works with Senegalese kora player and singer Seckou Keita to create new music with roots in multiple African regional musics (Mandinka and Yoruba), but add Chinese reeds (sheng master Wu Tong), Japanese koto (Mieko Miyazaki) along with Afro-Latin piano and percussion (Venzuelean artist Gustavo Ovalles). (A RootsWorld Music of the Month selection)

Ale Moller : Bouzoukispelman
This is one of the first recordings that turned me on to the folk revival of the 80s in Sweden. It includes an absolutely marvelous group of traditional and neo-traditional songs, as well as his infamous, high-spirited medley of Paul Simon songs (Mrs Robinson and 59th Street Bridge Song). It's a classic and the other musicians on the album are Ellika Frisell, Per Gudmundson, Totte Mattsson, Bill McChesney, Katarina Olsson, Simon Simonson, and Röjås Jonas, so it's a bit of a Filarfolket/Groupa/Nordan thing, as well. Highly recommended and brilliant, good fun.
